The opening race of the 2026 GT America powered by AWS season at Sonoma Raceway delivered action throughout the field, as Memo Gidley claimed a commanding victory on home soil, while David Lecko secured a historic first win for Ginetta in North America and Craig Lumsden completed a strong showing in GT4.

SRO3 Class

The 40-minute sprint began cleanly at the front, with Gidley in the No. 56 SKI AUTOSPORTS Audi R8 LMS GT3 EVO II launching from pole position. Behind him, Scott Blind in the No. 45 Ruckus Racing Porsche 911 GT3-R (992) EVO made an immediate move, gaining a position to slot into third.

Early drama unfolded just laps into the race, as Joel Cortes in the No. 19 RS1 Porsche 911 GT3-R (992) attempted a move down the inside of Mirco Schultis in the No. 70 MISHUMOTORS Callaway Corvette C7 GT3-R. The two made contact, forcing both drivers into early retirement after just three laps.

As the race settled, Gidley established control at the front, building a comfortable gap while Canadian Marc Muzzo in the No. 013 R. Ferri Motorsport Ferrari 296 GT3 held steady in second. Behind them, a tightly packed group from third through sixth remained locked in battle, led by Blind.

Mid-race, a familiar battle resumed between Kyle Washington in the No. 32 GMG Racing Porsche 911 GT3-R (992) EVO and Ross Chouest in the No. 50 Chouest Povoledo Racing Chevrolet Corvette Z06 GT3.R, with Washington applying sustained pressure in the fight for position.

The race took another turn when Dave Musial Sr. in the No. 72 Wright Motorsports Porsche 911 GT3-R (992) ran wide exiting the carousel, allowing Chouest to slip through. Musial’s troubles continued as debris clogged his front grille, forcing him to pit after losing several positions.

With just over eight minutes remaining, Washington set the fastest lap of the race, temporarily placing himself in line for pole position for Race 2 while continuing to close the gap to Chouest.

Gidley responded late in the race, reclaiming the fastest lap on lap 19, while Musial, recovering from his pit stop, also posted competitive times in a late push for tomorrow’s grid position.

A standout race saw Tony Davis in the No. 04 HP-TECH Motorsport Ferrari 296 GT3 gain four positions to cap off an impressive drive through the field.

When the checkered flag flew, Gidley crossed the line to secure victory at his home circuit, followed by Muzzo and Blind to complete the podium. “It’s awesome,” said Memo Gidley after the race. “Coming back here with SKI AUTOSPORTS, having my family here, especially my daughter, it makes it really special to win at home.”

Ross Chouest finished fourth, holding off late pressure from Kyle Washington, who rounded out the top five after an aggressive and pace-filled drive. Musial’s earlier issues prevented him from contending for a top result, despite his recovery effort.

Looking ahead, Gidley will start Race 2 from pole position, with Washington and Musial set to line up behind him.

Cup Class

The Cup class saw a milestone moment for the series, as David Lecko in the No. 89 RacingSupport Ginetta GTP8 captured victory, marking the first win for Ginetta in North American competition.

“Beautiful weather, great crew, great car, I’ve really enjoyed being here. This is about building something new with Ginetta and taking the next step forward.”

Competing in the new platform’s debut season, Lecko delivered a composed and consistent drive to secure the historic result and establish an early benchmark for the program.

GT4 Class

In GT4, Craig Lumsden in the No. 610 Flying Lizard Motorsports BMW M4 GT4 (G82) EVO completed another strong outing as the sole entry in the class.

Bringing experience from events such as Dakar, Baja, and Pikes Peak, Lumsden managed traffic and mixed-class racing effectively to bring the BMW home cleanly, continuing to build momentum early in the 2026 campaign.

“It’s exciting, you get goosebumps when those GT3 cars come up on you. I felt really good out there and just focused on staying consistent.”
