Series Explainer: GT America powered by AWS

After making its debut in 2021, GT America powered by AWS has rapidly established itself as a premier sprint racing championship, combining the intensity of short-format competition with some of the most advanced GT machinery in the world. Heading into the 2026 season, the series continues to evolve, with additional car models joining the grid to further expand competition and diversity across all classes.

Focused on delivering high-impact, performance-driven racing, GT America maintains a streamlined and purposeful format that complements SRO Motorsports Group’s globally recognized GT racing platform. The championship provides an environment where precision, speed, and strategy are placed at the forefront, creating compelling on-track battles from start to finish.

Backed by more than three decades of global GT racing leadership and over 35 years of uninterrupted sports car racing in North America, GT America powered by AWS stands as a destination series for competitive drivers seeking elite-level racing combined with premium hospitality and professional organization.

The championship will once again feature two 40-minute sprint races per event weekend, and competition remains open to Bronze-rated drivers, with eligible machinery spanning the GT2, GT3, and GT4 categories, ensuring a wide range of performance characteristics and strategic approaches on track.

Furthermore, the GT4 class entries contribute towards the global GT4 Manufacturer Ranking, with points being awarded based on the overall classification of each round. A maximum of two cars per registered manufacturer are eligible to score points over the course of a full season, directly contributing to the global standings.

For 2026, GT America officially welcomes Cup cars to its grids, adding a new dimension to the championship. Race-prepared Porsche Cup, Lamborghini Super Trofeo, and Ferrari Challenge cars will be eligible to compete. The popular Masters Award also returns, honoring the highest-finishing driver aged 55 and older at each race weekend.

Cars are differentiated by power output, aerodynamics, and drivetrain layouts, with GT3 entries delivering the highest horsepower, followed by GT2 and GT4 machinery. Clear visual identifiers are used throughout the field, including side and rear bumper number panels that are color-coded by class: blue for GT2, red for GT3, and yellow for GT4.

The 2026 campaign opens at Sonoma Raceway before visiting an elite roster of North American circuits, including Circuit of the Americas, Sebring International Raceway, Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta, Road America, and Barber Motorsports Park, before concluding the season at the iconic Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

The 2025 season delivered a compelling championship fight, with Justin Rothberg ultimately claiming the title after narrowly missing out the year before by a single point. An intense battle with Kyle Washington defined the opening half of the season, but Rothberg’s consistency and momentum in the latter stages allowed him to break clear and secure the long-awaited championship crown.
