GT America Reckons with COTA for Practice One

Practice One for GT America powered by AWS was welcome by humid but cool Texas temperatures. The morning practice session reverberated the bowl of the 3.425-mile, 20-turn circuit as the two classes settled into a rhythm while circulating.

The series welcomes 24 cars for the weekend in Austin, Texas with eight manufacturer monikers gracing the grid. Over the duration of the 30-minute session saw very little turmoil with few drivers facing track limit warnings, a staple offense at America’s circuit. The many flowing turns allow for drivers to carry speed throughout the turns giving way to a creative take on the racing lines.


SRO3 Class
The grid was well staggard between classes, but the top four spots belonged to that of the SRO3 Class. Adam Adelson in the No. 120 Wright Motorsports Porsche 911 GT3 R settled in fastest with a lap time of 2:06.497. Scott Smithson with the No. 08 DXDT Racing Mercedes-AMG GT3 was close behind in lap times laying down a 2:06.887. He was followed by George Kurtz in the No. 04 Crowdstrike by Riley Mercedes-AMG GT3 with a best lap of 2:07.061.

The fourth fastest was the points leader Memo Gidley in the No. 101 TKO Motorsports Mercedes-AMG GT3. Gidley follows his NOLA Motorsports Park sweep with a lap time of 2:07.249 in his first session at COTA. Mr. 350 himself, James Sofronas in the No. 14 GMG Racing Audi R8 LMS GT3 closed out the top five of the class turning a 2:07.334.


GT4 Class
Jason Bell topped the session in his No. 2 Flying Lizard Motorsports Aston Martin Vantage AMR GT4 with a 2:17.322 flying lap. The No. 099 Rotek Racing Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS Clubsport of Robb Holland settled into line nicely with a 2:17.464 lap. Elias Sabo, Race Two winner at NOLA, put together a lap time of 2:17.464 in the No. 8 Flying Lizard Motorsports Aston Martin Vantage AMR GT4.

The No. 25 Heart of Racing Team Aston Martin Vantage AMR GT4 was fourth fastest with a 2:17.524. Rounding out the top five was Todd Coleman in the No. 69 Archangel Motorsports Astone Martin Vantage AMR GT4. The lap times and machinery showed a very consistent theme by the end of practice.


Practice Two for GT America powered by AWS takes place Friday, May 19 at 1:45 p.m. CT. The afternoon session will provide wildly different temperatures and track surface for the competitors. The second 30-minute session provides the teams one final opportunity to get their cars in order prior to qualifying taking place Saturday, May 20.
